Cost of Delay x Effort Matrix (WSJF)

Introduction

This Canvas Background helps establish priorities by mapping potential work items (Epics, Features, or Stories) in two dimensions:

• X-axis: Effort/Size (Duration)
• Y-axis: Cost of Delay (considering Value/Priority/Impact)

Approach

1. Before inviting participants, pre-populate the template with known work items and adjust the X-axis and Y-axis regions to match your conventions for capturing Cost of Delay and Effort. For example, you might change the X-axis regions from T-Shirt sizes to Story Points or forecasted costs. You might change the Y-axis regions from Low, Medium, High, and Very High to forecasted revenue.
2. Invite participants and encourage them to collaborate on the placement of items.
3. Review the recommended work order and confirm alignment within the team.
